GULE WAMKULU

Gule Wamkulu is a ritual that is practiced in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. Literally translated into English, the “Great Dance” is traditional to the Chewa people who become the human embodiment of animals and spirits to mark important occasions such as harvest, marriage, and death.

The performers are summoned by the village elders at times when they are needed, each one symbolising a different character to teach moral and social values, and provide communication from the ancestors.
